For years Buddhist majority Myanmar has struggled to deal with a deeply rooted hatred towards the Rohingya. The Muslim ethnic minority were always considered illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and denied the rights of citizenship.

The refugee emergency unfolded in late August 2017, the Myanmar military mounted a brutal campaign that destroyed hundreds of Rohingya villages and forced over 650,000 Rohingya to leave Myanmar creating the fastest cross-border exodus ever witnessed. Nearly all who fled during the exodus have sought shelter in and around the refugee settlements in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district that borders Myanmar.
